Celebrity divorces, it appears, cuts across the globe from one entertainment industry to the other. Time for Hollywood to take a backseat as we take a look at all of our very own Naija celebs who are making up to break up.
Stephanie Okereke Before the apparent marital bliss that is Stephanie’s union with hubby, Idahosa Linus, there was her marriage with former Super Eagles player, Chikelue Iloenyosi, which was contracted in 2004. But the marriage was short-lived; it didn’t take very long for the actress to yank her then-husband to court in a bid to bullify the marriage on the grounds that he was sleeping around with other women.
Chika IkeThe actress got married to Tony Eberiri in 2006, but a few years later, the union hit the rocks following allegations ranging from infidelity to assault. The actress, who filed for divorce, said in an interview: “I have a lot of friends who would have left their marriages but because of the African society, their in-laws, what people will say or other factors, they stay. We’ve heard a lot of deaths caused by bad marriages and before the death, there would have been signs, things would have been happening leading up to that. I think it has to do with age and many other things like compatibility and not being true to yourself in the marriage. Everybody has a limit. There are some things in marriage that you might not be able to stand. Some people’s limit might not be my limit. My limit might be somebody’s starting point.”
Her ex-husband has been reported to deny her claims of abuse in their marriage.
Shan George Her dream to become an actress stemmed from watching TV through the window at the only house with a TV set in the village and desiring to be on TV too. At 15 years, she was married off to a much older man on the promise that he would educate her. Two kids and six years later, Shan walked out on her marriage amid claims that her ex-husband wouldn’t send her to school and had turned her into a punching bag. After she graduated from the University of Lagos at the age of 29, she tried her hand in matrimonial bliss a couple of times. Both unions didn’t work out.
Eucharia AnunobiBefore the veteran actress found her calling in the Christian ministry, she got married and then got embroiled in one of the messiest divorces in the history of the entertainment industry. She wedded her husband, Charles Ekwu in December 2000. The marriage produced a son and was six years old before it crumbled. And then amid speculation that her husband had deserted her and fled from their matrimonial home, Eucharia petitioned her estranged husband, demanding for a N100 million divorce settlement on the grounds of abandonment, irresponsibility and cheating.
Kate Henshaw Star actress Kate Henshaw and her hubby Roderick James Nuttal parted ways after twelve years of marriage, citing ‘irreconcilable differences’ as the reason they could no longer be together. Those who know the actress and her beau claimed the separation was not bitter at all, and that it came as a result of the hectic schedule of their careers. Apparently, with Kate shuttling from one location to another (across the country and sometimes abroad), honouring endorsement engagements, and Rod constantly traveling in his capacity as the Managing Director of Ledrop Nigeria Ltd, there was hardly any time to make things work between them.
Fred AmataNollywood actor, Fred Amata has become something of a lothario, moving in and out of relationships with a speed that would shame lightning. His divorce from talk show host, Agatha Amata was well-publicized, after which he went into a tumultuous relationship with actress and now Actors’ Guild of Nigeria President, Ibinabo Fiberesima, an affair produced a child before they parted ways and since then, he has been in and out of a string of relationships but none has been sustainable. His last relationship with Soul/Jazz artiste, Mor Okonkwo – one that many thought would take them down the altar – has recently concluded its chapter.
Monalisa ChindaShe’s currently romancing new man, Lanre Nzeribe. But before him was her ex-husband, Segun Dejo-Richards. The five-year-old marriage was besieged with speculations of estrangement towards its end, prompting the actress to release a statement confirming the news of its demise. In the statement, the mother of one says the marriage broke down because of incompatibility and irreconcilable differences. Despite the break-up, she said she would continue to respect her husband, promising to take care of her daughter and not to rehash the sordid details of the failed marriage in the media.
The break-up came as a surprise to many as Monalisa was reported to have vowed that nothing could separate her from her husband. She was once quoted to have said at the christening of their daughter, Tamar Kirejesu, that if she were to reincarnate, she would still marry Dejo again.
Well, both parties have since moved on. Dejo has married – and divorced – again, and Monalisa, on her alleged romance with Lanre, reportedly said, “Yes, there is a man in my life. It’s neither here nor there. I’m a lover and I love to love.”
Tchidi and Sophia ChikereAfter nine years of union that produced three sons, movie producer, Tchidi Chikere and his wife, Sophia decided to go their separate ways. They reached this juncture after several break-ups – amid cheating claims – and efforts to make the marriage work failed. The relationship was reported to be taking its toll on the children and affecting the personal happiness of the couple.
Funke Akindele and Kehinde OloyedeTheirs proved to be one of the shortest marriages in showbiz. They wedded in May 2012 and 14 months later, the union hit the rocks. Tongues started wagging about the demise of the marriage, after Kehinde updated on his Facebook page that the marriage was over, claiming that Funke was the greatest mistake he’d made in recent times. After an initial denial, Funke confirmed the split through a message from her publicist. And it doesn’t look like this break-up will result in a friendly ex-couple, what with Funke making claims of abuse from her estranged husband.
