The traditional wife shakes her hips

And dances to the talking drum’s lips

Her husband had decided he wanted a new wife,

Fresh palm wine to bring a new taste to his life

The traditional wife merely smiles and serves him

Keeping her feelings inside just like she had been taught.

He wanted fresh palm wine?!

 She laughs to herself.

What then would she want?

She had been stuck with him longer than he had been with her.

Married off to him at birth,

She had learnt to deliver fake smiles with a bitter mirth.

The wedding day of her replacement had come

The new wife who would take away her home.

The traditional wife shakes her hips

And dances to the talking drum’s lips.

She could have run away at sixteen with Ade

Her first love, a trained ode!

Raised by her mother to be laissez-faire

She patiently waited to be chained.

The shackles of marriage came

So also did the children.

And slowly the love and tolerance for her husband grew

And by the gods, she loved him a love so true!

The traditional wife performs her duties happily

Only to be told, she’s old, fat and disgusting!

She wants to protest! She wants to name all she sacrificed for him but no!

The traditional wife shakes her hips

And dances to the talking drum’s lips.

Nicely written. I was waiting to see if you would compare the traditional wife to the modern wife’s reaction to her husband marrying a new wife. Nicely written. Well done.

    • Thank you. I do have a piece on the modern mother except it depicts a tale of her growing up to be completely different from her mother and in that she succeeds but loses her children along the way. it’s quite sad.
