The Comment About Hair That Landed Fashion Police Host, Giuliana Rancic In Trouble

UPDATE:

Giuliana Rancic has issued another apology on Tuesday – this time on-air admitting: “Something I said did cross the line.” She goes on to say, “I didn’t intend to hurt anybody, but I’ve learned it is not my intent that matters. It’s the result. And the result is that people are offended, including Zendaya, and that is not okay. Therefore, I want to say to Zendaya and anyone else out there that I have hurt, that I am so, so sincerely sorry.” See full video below.

In addition, Kelly Osborne as also offered more insight and commentary. The “Fashion Police” co-host took to Twitter once again and has denied making the “weed” comment and is threatening to leave the show if this racially charged matter isn’t resolved. ORIGINAL STORY:

Folks are fuming over comments made by “Fashion Police” host Giuliana Rancic during the show’s Academy Awards red carpet recap special that aired Monday night.

And there’s good reason. While commenting on actress/singer Zendaya’s look, which included a satin ivory Vivienne Westwood gown and a head of waist-length locs, Rancic said, “I feel like she smells like patchouli oil.” That sentiment was followed with, “Or weed,” by co-host Kelly Osbourne and then repeated by Rancic.zendaya-oscars

If you’re cringing, then you’re not alone. Twitter erupted after the comments surfaced, arguing that the state and style of Black women’s hair continues to be a topic of discussion and unfair scrutiny. From TSA agents patting down Afros, a woman having to cut her locs to keep her job, and the Army’s discriminatory ban on particular African American hairstyles – the list goes on and on.

With that said, it’s no surprise that Zendaya didn’t take the insult lightly and penned a powerful open letter to Rancic via Instagram, blasting the critic for her harsh words and ignorance.Screenshot - 2_26_2015 , 4_59_00 AM

Shortly after that post went live, Rancic issued an apology on Twitter saying that her comments were in reference to a “bohemian chic look” and not race.Screenshot - 2_26_2015 , 5_00_51 AM

Osbourne also took to Twitter to respond to the controversy.Screenshot - 2_26_2015 , 5_01_23 AM

  1. Please dear God, let this lead to the one same person, Kelly, leaving the show. Then we sit back and happily watch the show fall flat on its ratings and ultimately getting pulled off the air.
The show has become a nightmare, it’s terrible to watch. From Kathy’s creepy smile(Why does she keep smiling) to Brad trying so hard to get people to like him(he is failing miserably) and Gulianna’s off putting attitude, Kelly is the one likeable person still left. I tried watching the show last night and I couldn’t, it really has become that terrible.

Joan dying was literally the worst thing that could ever have happened to the show. I wonder how their ratings are doing.

  2. I Don’t Like Kelly!!!!!

That being said, I don’t like Giulianna either. She stole my boyfriend..

  3. How disgusting!…making a statement like that..on air!… that being said..no man is infallible shaa..
That show should be squashed already….just has lost its flair #tsk tsk.

    • America lays too much emphasis on political correctness that people can no loner be genuine or honest. I am a black man and I hate dreads too!

      • shakespeareanwalter

But it isn’t about whether you like the dreads or not. It’s about the insinuation that the dreads are just no good. Patchouli oil and weed? Oh come on.

      • The Lady With AfroLocs

u hate it does’nt mean u should put pple who have dreads/locs down…that’s outrightly wrong..my hair doesnt do well with lye so i prefer staying natural and i loc’d my hair. but that is even besides the point…you dont/why would you automatically associate locs to weed..and why can’t natural hair be associated with the smell of strawberries and mangoes with a hint of coconut? why is it even associated with a smell at all?
Can i say that Guiliana’s hair smells of musty dry tomato sauce and garlic? Afterall she is Italian….*straightface*
        Downright rude!

Hi, Lady With AfroLocs, I was hoping you’d come around. 😀 ‘Guiliana’s hair smells of musty dry tomato sauce and garlic? Afterall she is Italian’ Hahahahahahahahahahaaha! Oh my goodness, someone has to make sure Giuliana sees this

      • I was going to say the exact same thing. These Westerners need to sit down one place. Everything is offensive to them.
If Joan Rivers had made the statement, no one would have batted an eyelid. Now they almost detonated Giulliana’s head. WHAT A BLOODY DOUBLE STANDARD.

  4. This was my fav show and I watched for the comdey mostly as I dont care much about fashion. I was a fan until Joan Died because Joan was the only real person on the show. She was an 80-something woman who doesnt care whose ox is gored even though I will agree that she does cross the lines sometimes.

George is a stylist so he was never a harsh critic as he did not want to piss off potential clients. He always liked everything.

Guilliana is an entertainment reporter, she respects the A-listers (she never dares say anything bad about them) else they will not grant her interviews, but she feels free to tear the starlets apart. After that grammy that she said beyonce looked like she was going on school runs for blue ivy and voted her worst dressed beyonce has never spoken to her on the red carpet again. So she is usually not objective

Kelly is an entertainer too and hollywood royalty so most of the celebs are her friends hence her opinion is often colored.

With the new cast I wasnt impressed, Kathy i will Agree with anyibaba that she has a creepy smile that wierds me out. I do like the new guy though cos he is cute, but the truth is that this show will soon be cancelled. It lost its zest after Joan passed, they should just rest it

    • shakespeareanwalter

Wait, Giulinana said WHAT about Beyonce?! :O LOL! I won’t ever speak to her myself if she said such. and that’s the genius of Joan. She was very caustic, but still had a gift that made her adorable to these celebrities.

  5. After Joan Rivers died, I personally stopped watching the show. Its a good thing Zendaya replied them, the comment was so offensive.

  6. Why do people still expect candy to rain on a show that’s engineered on dark humour (notice that I didn’t state “black comedy”; that might be racist). Zendaya’s letter is beautiful, well-written, and we both love India Are —which is a plus for her —but I don’t believe her hairstyle choice was for the reasons she stated. I wonder how many new followers she got on Instagram following her poignant open letter.
When black comedians make fun of white people, no one pulls the race card. Racism is still a huge issue, yes; and we all should kick against it as vehemently as possible, but I think we should choose our mediums more wisely. There’s such a thing as being overly sensitive, and what all this brouhaha tells me is that too many black people are insecure, and, in their insecurities, can no longer tell when they are being preyed on.

    • shakespeareanwalter

LOL! You’re right, Dozie. Blacks are overly sensitive. and your cynicism about Zendaya…lol. You sounded like a commenter against Zendaya’s second letter (yes, she wrote another one on instagram), who told her to shut up and stop kicking up a fuss about race that isn’t there.

  7. And btw y’all, I think Kathy and the rest of the team are doing a good job. Hated the show for the first few weeks when they started, but I’ve warmed to it now. There was only one Joan.
Kathy can’t fill those shoes, but she’s got good help, and I still find the show hilarious.

  8. Joan would’ve gotten away with that comment. This is what happens when you try to be someone you’re not.
I haven’t seen the show since Joan died.
Giuliana tried to come out of her “safe” space and she got kicked back.
And Kelly short yam tubber legs should stop being such a Lil bitch. She shld take responsibility too. After all she suggested the word “weed”.
