It looks like one of Hollywood’s golden couples is over; Angelina Jolie has filed for divorce from Brad Pitt.
The duo previously known as Brangelina married in a private ceremony in August 2014 at Chateau Miraval in the South of France, witnessed by their closest friends and family – a decade after they first got together. Here’s a timeline of their relationship…
2004: The pair meet on the set of Doug Liman’s action comedy Mr & Mrs Smith. Despite being plagued with rumours of a romance, the pair insist they’re just friends.
March 2005: Just a couple of months after Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston announce they are separating after almost five years of marriage, the Friends star files for divorce citing ‘irreconcilable differences’.
July 2005: Later that year, Brad and Angelina grace the cover of W magazine, with an accompanying ’50s-style photoshoot – entitled ‘Domestic Bliss’ – presenting the pair as a couple surrounded by young children.
January 2006: Angelina confirms that she’s pregnant, expecting with her first child with Brad. She officially changes Maddox and Zahara’s surnames to Jolie-Pitt, as Brad legally adopts them. The couple soon become affectionately referred to as ‘Brangelina’ by the press.
March 2007: A year later, Angelina adopts 3-year-old Pax, who was born in Vietnam.
May 2008: Jack Black accidentally lets slip that Angelina and Brad are expecting twins while he promotes animated comedy Kung Fu Panda at the Cannes Film Festival. Then, Dustin Hoffman goes and announces the due date of the fraternal twins during a press conference at the festival.
November 2008: Angelina prompts Jennifer Aniston to deem her “uncool” after she reveals to The New York Times that she can’t wait for her children to see Mr & Mrs Smith, as “not a lot of people get to see a movie where their parents fell in love”.
November 2008: Angelina tells GMTV that she’s in no hurry to get married – arguing that raising their family is the ultimate commitment. “We jumped into being a family first, and that just seems like the biggest commitment you could possibly make. So, it doesn’t feel like anything is lacking,” she says.
December 2008: Brad tells Rolling Stone that Mr & Mrs Smith is his favourite film because that’s when he fell for Angelina. He enthuses: “Because you know, six kids. Because I fell in love.”
August 2009: Brad continues to reaffirm the sentiment that he and Angelina will get married “when everyone else in the country who wants to be married is legally able”, which he originally stated during an interview with Esquire magazine back in 2006.
August 2011: Angelina plays down speculation that she and Brad are organizing a “secret wedding”, and talks about how supportive he was as she directed her first movie, In the Land of Blood and Honey – a love story set against the background of the Bosnian War.
“He’d come in and say what he liked or what he didn’t understand. Like any woman, I would listen to most of it and fight a few things,” she added. “He’s been so supportive. “But it’s hard to separate the person that loves you from the critic, so I don’t think he’s a fair judge.”
January 2012: Pitt once again states the couple’s stance that they don’t intend to tie the knot until marriage equality for same-sex couples is a reality – but says they’re finding it difficult to hold out.
“We’d actually like to [get married] and it seems to mean more and more to our kids. We made this declaration some time ago that we weren’t going to do it till everyone can. But I don’t think we’ll be able to hold out,” Pitt told The Hollywood Reporter.
“It means so much to my kids, and they ask a lot. And it means something to me, too, to make that kind of commitment. I’m not going to go any further. But to be in love with someone and be raising a family with someone and want to make that commitment and not be able to is ludicrous, just ludicrous.”
Angelina and Brad later both say that his comments got a bit “blown out of proportion”.
April 2012: Brad and Angelina’s engagement is officially confirmed by his publicist Cynthia Pett-Dante, who announces: “It is a promise for the future and their kids are very happy. There’s no date set at this time.”
May 2013: In an emotional essay for The New York Times, Angelina confirms she underwent a preventative double mastectomy, after discovering that she carried genes which significantly increased the risk of her of developing breast cancer and ovarian cancer (Two years later, she would have an oophorectomy).
May 2014: Angelina reveals to People magazine that the couple’s children are helping plan the wedding and jokes that it will be like “Disney or paintball”. She also opens up about their relationship to Elle magazine, and admits that she and Brad drive each other “beautifully crazy”.
August 2014: The pair team up as they prepare to share the silver screen – for the first time in nine years – on By the Sea, written and directed by Angelina.
August 2014: Brangelina officially become husband and wife, tying the knot at Chateau Miraval in the romantic French village of Correns.
Angelina was walked down the aisle by her oldest sons Maddox and Pax, while Zahara and Vivienne threw petals, and twins Shiloh and Knox were given the role of ring bearers. She wore a Versace outfit which incorporated some of the children’s drawings in the dress and veil.
November 2014: Angelina admits that married life feels different, telling Vanity Fair: “It feels nice to be husband and wife.”
She also discussed the vows that their kids wrote for the wedding, saying: “They did not expect us never to fight, but they made us promise to always say sorry if we do. So they said, ‘Do you?’ And we said, ‘We do!'”
November 2015: Angelina’s By the Sea, in which she and Brad star as a troubled couple trying to save their marriage, opens to mixed reviews. Digital Spy’s Emma Dibdin wrote: “Ennui looks good on the Jolie Pitts, but then what doesn’t? The ravishing beauty of the couple and their surroundings is a long way from being enough to sustain 132 minutes so bereft of actual incident that they seem to be going in slow motion.”
September 2016: Angelina files for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences.
Her lawyer says: “This decision was made for the health of the family. She will not be commenting, and asks that the family be given its privacy at this time.”
