Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o and recent Golden Globe nominee David Oyelowo have been cast in the film version of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s novel, Americanah.
The casting, reported by Variety, is another step forward for the cinematic adaptation of Adichie’s celebrated book, which the New York Times Book Review deemed one of 2013’s 10 best. Americanah tells the story of Ifemelu and Obinze, two lovers in Nigeria who reflect on their relationship and experiences emigrating to America and the United Kingdom, respectively.
Nyong’o has been attached to the project since June. Oyelowo just signed on, after recently appearing in Interstellar, A Most Violent Year, and Selma, for which he received a Golden Globe nomination.
So we now have a face attached to Ifemelu and Obinze…me can’t wait to see this production.
Aswear. Hollywood should handle it tho. We can’t have it being the mess HOAYS was.
Lupita is a great actress but I really think they should cast someone else as Ifemelu, I don’t think Nyongo is “Ifemelu worthy”. Ifemelu is an Igbo girl and she should have a Nigerian assent. Lupita has gotten her spotlight, let them give another girl a chance. #MyThoughts
Oh Cassie, you are going to be one of those? You know, the kind of people who maintain that Nigerian thespians must act Nigerian characters.
Well This is awesome. i am a huge fan of Lupita and David they are both brilliant actors.
Brad Pitt’s production company Plan B responsible for such award worthy hits like, 12 years a slave, moneyball, and Selma, is producing so the movie is in great hands.
I am not worried about Lupita not being Nigerian, i think she has enough range to pull ifemelu off.
HOAYS was such a mess, this one couldnt be any worse.
